White Sand and Sweater

In 1970, when Tàpies created this painting made from white sand on canvas and used it as a physical support for a sweater, he wrote the text Nothing is mean, in which he tells us:

‘It is only by the light of this inner whiteness that appears to surge in order to tell us what we really are that I feel I might again find the necessary strength to rediscover the beauty we felt was definitely lost in the world: the soil watered by our poet friend, the kiss that effects the change from child to woman, the wall mirror that, in the best of all possible prestiges, reflects inside us the same light, now transformed, of the ever-turning world.’
