MACBA in the Archives of Women Artists Every day is 8 March!
An exhibition of women artists in the MACBA Collection joins AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions. Created ten years ago by Camille Morineau, an art historian, expert in the history of women artists and former curator at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, AWARE is a major digital archive of women artists from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries all over the world. With the aim of classifying artists and making their work known, Morineau explains that she created the archive ‘to re-write art history from a more gender-equal perspective’. Playing with the concept of ‘awareness’ and the association’s acronym, AWARE offers the complete profile of the artists plus a sample of their work, together with interviews, articles, research, exhibitions and bibliography, as well as meetings announcements, awards and symposiums. Gradually becoming a digital reference hub, MACBA joins it with a first exhibition of artists from the Collection: Dara Birnbaum, Eulàlia Grau, María Teresa Hincapié, Teresa Lanceta, Mabel Palacín, Tere Recarens and Eulàlia Valldosera. Artists in the MACBA Collection
Dara Birnbaum
Born in 1946 in New York City, where she still lives and works, Dara Birnbaum trained in architecture and urban planning at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the San Francisco Art Institute. In 1976, she graduated in video and electronic editing from the New School for Social Research in New York. Together with Dan Graham, she taught at the Nova Scotia College in Halifax. In 1978 she began using video to deal with the forms of expression and mechanisms of the medium of television, and how it presents political events and reinforces the stereotypes of popular culture.
Eulàlia Grau
Eulàlia Grau (Terrassa 1946), also known simply as Eulàlia, began to study Fine Art in Barcelona but abandoned it in favour of cinema studies at the Sala Aixelà under teachers such as Pere Portabella and Alexandre Cirici, and at the Eina School where she met Albert Ràfols-Casamada and Josep Maria Carandell. In Milan she worked at the design studio Olivetti. Most of her work was done during the seventies and early eighties.
María Teresa Hincapié
María Teresa Hincapié was born in Armenia, Colombia, and died at the age of 54 following a long illness. A performative artist, she was a key figure in the development of performance art during the 1980s and 1990s. Initially trained in theatre as a member of the group Acto Latino and influenced by the ideas of Jerzy Grotowski (1933–1999) and the experimental horizon that this Polish theatre director had opened around the concept of ‘poor theatre’, Hincapié was interested in a clean, simple and austere dramaturgy.
Teresa Lanceta
After studying History and doing a PhD in Art History at the Universidad Complutense, Madrid, Teresa Lanceta spent long periods of time in Alicante, Granada, Madrid, Seville and Marrakesh. She has taught at the School of Architecture in Alicante and at the Escola Massana in Barcelona. From the early 1970s, Lanceta opted for weaving as a form of artistic expression, blurring the boundaries between what is considered art and craft.
Mabel Palacín
Mabel Palacín (Barcelona, 1965) has a degree in Art History and Film, Photography and Video from the University of Barcelona. She is part of the generation of Catalan artists who took their first steps in the art world in the early nineties, following the tradition of conceptual art. Her work focuses on the centrality of images in the contemporary world and the way we relate to them.
Tere Recarens
Tere Recarens was born in Arbúcies (Girona) in 1967. Having studied at the Escola Massana, Barcelona, the École supérieure d’art, Grenoble, and the École supérieure d’art et de design, Marseilles, she now lives and works in Berlin. Her interdisciplinary production includes drawing, words, photography, video and installation, employing everyday language and a sense of humour.
Eulàlia Valldosera
Eulàlia Valldosera (Vilafranca del Penedès, 1963) studied painting at the Facultat de Belles Arts de la Universitat de Barcelona, and printmaking at the Escola d’Arts i Oficis de Catalunya. From 1990 to 1994 she lived in Amsterdam, where she graduated in audiovisual studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, and from 1999 to 2000 she lived in Berlin. She currently lives and works in Barcelona.
