Sin according to Valeska Soares “I think of sinning as a creative act”
Sinners is a relatively early work by Brazilian artist Valeska Soares. It suggests the absent body through the imprint of a person’s knees in the wax surface of a bench. It is as if they had been made by a person praying, with the dual implication both of piety and sin. Soares’ sculpture combines an evocation of Catholicism with Brazil’s tradition of experimental art, which has frequently taken the form of a reflection on the body, sensuality and the sensory. Moreover, as Soares has explained: “I was thinking of sin’s nature, how it is seen or how it exists, because sinning is sort of an intoxication in and of itself. It means there is a border you have to cross… but not necessarily into something bad. I think of sinning as a creative act.”
