Calidoscopi, 1981

Kaleidoscope, 1981
Media installation, Variable dimensions

In the mid-1970s, Carles Pujol decided to shift from two-dimensional pictorial space to three-dimensional work. He performed this linguistic change without abandoning his interest in the geometrisation of space, the play of perspectives and the multiplicity of points of view. Presented at Metrònom in 1981, this installation sets up a dialogue between a fixed, three-dimensional component – the profile of a cube made of wooden stretcher bars suspended in space – and another that was changeable – the projection of images on the wall. As projected on the wall/screen, with its unequivocal kaleidoscopic effect, the shadow of the cube, with the lines marking out its shape, also becomes a changeable feature as the viewer’s gaze shifts through the space.
