Discriminació de la dona, 1977
On the street, at home, at work, in advertising and in prison—Eulàlia Grau presents a series of silkscreen prints to show the circumstances of women in 1977 in a direct manner. While in other works, such as the series entitled Etnografies, she had already addressed gender inequality, here the focus is even sharper. Discriminació de la dona is the culmination of a project begun in 1971 that used collages of media images. Her decision to use low contrast, out-of-focus imagery is deliberate as well. These are “dirty” images, like the very reality that is hidden behind the perfect bodies the media opts to project. In the presentation at Galería Ciento in Barcelona, Maria Aurèlia Capmany alluded to the idea of a “photographic safari”, referring to the way Eulàlia would capture images, as if in the wild. This is a political, sociological and ethnographic piece which here finds its place as a historical document. “It was almost journalism”, the artist stated in 2011.
