We invite MACBA Friends to visit The Lost Mirror: Jews and “Conversos” the Middle Ages, an exhibition at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.

The exhibition includes a set of works conceived by Christians in Spain between 1285 and 1492 that focuses on the portraits they made of Jews and conversos during that period.

Christians and Jews lived in a shared space with permeable religious borders, where collaboration between artists was common. Aware of the power of images, they used them intensively and ended up playing a fundamental role in the complex relationship between these communities.

The works in the exhibition are presented as a mirror that reflects ways of seeing the world in mediaeval times and remind us that otherness is constructed, even though difference exists.

Visit guided by Cèsar Favà, curator of the Gothic art collection of the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.
