The Collection builds a model that allows us to understand today’s world and shape a critical memory of the art of the last ninety years, without losing sight of the specific cultural and political reality of Barcelona. Through works by Catalan, Spanish and international artists, the Collection offers a tour of the fundamental aspects of the creation of contemporary art, understanding the history of art as a constantly evolving construction in which the barriers between different disciplines dissolve.
The uniqueness of the Collection owes in part to its central themes, as well as to its geographical position in Southern Europe. The Collection shows an interest in the analysis of production in the Mediterranean, in the close relationship with Latin America, in the influence of the American pop, minimal and conceptual movements and the European avant-garde as well as in the Middle East. In addition, other special characteristics such as the investigation of narratives forgotten or overlooked by art history, the importance of the body as a form of thought and the relationship between the visual arts and popular culture are worth noting. The powerful transformation that different feminist movements have introduced into art and its discourses and institutions is also a focal point.
The works of the MACBA Collection are exhibited in a number of galleries; together they make up a permanent exhibition occupying the first floor of the building and rotating dynamically throughout the year to make it possible to present the 5.402 pieces that make it up. They are organized through a timeline offering a porous narration of art history and its political and social context.
