El rastre de la sirena, 2014/2020
In this work made in 2014 in the sea off Cap de Creus, Fina Miralles takes a swim while a camera captures the ‘trail’. Displacing the water while swimming leaves a wake or trail of foam and turbulence suggestive of the tail of a mermaid. This ‘photo-action’, as the artist herself describes it, formed part of the resumption of actions carried out by Miralles in the early 2000s. After a long period during which she concentrated on other genres such as painting and drawing, Miralles returned to actions as a personal dialogue with nature, very much in keeping with the series she had made in the 1970s. In her artistic and private imagination, the element of the sea looms large; as early as 1975 she made a work entitled Relació del cos amb l’aigua del mar (The Body’s Relationship with Sea Water) as part of the series Relacions. Relació del cos amb elements naturals (Relationships: The Body’s Relationship with Natural Elements), an action in which the artist immersed herself in the sea before swimming away toward the horizon.
