'I’d say I’m kind of a painter, but not really a painter. I'm interested in painting. I'm interested in the history of painting. But in my work painting is introduced in very different ways through the image, through video, through installations.'

'When I arrived in Mexico I understood that I had to break these forms, and the minimalist surface. And breaking this surface in some way involved bringing the street… bringing the socio-political situation into my work. And how did I do it? I introduced the idea of the making-of. And that making-of is like a break in political life in order to understand what lies behind and in front of the scene.' Melanie Smith
