Les Animaux de la ferme, 1974

Farm Animals, 1974
Graphic material, 2 elements 82 x 60 cm each
Marcel Broodthaers’ graphic work, Les Animaux de la ferme (Farm Animals), establishes a parallel between several breeds of cattle and car manufacturers. Presented in a grid similar to the pages of an educational or scientific manual, the different names of oxen and cows have been replaced by makes of car. The makes Mercedes, Renault, Maserati or Volkswagen designate different breeds of cattle. Les Animaux de la ferme is linked to other works by the artist in which he explores the workings of classification systems, producing what might be called a second order of classification. Broodthaers plays with visual and linguistic meanings in a similar way to one of his creative references and friend, Rene Magritte, a fellow Belgian and painter. Both demonstrate the arbitrary and conventional relationship between words and objects
