A hundred years ago today, Antoni Tàpies was born in Barcelona. A universal artist and one of the foremost representatives of Informalism, the MACBA Collection has a significant number of his works from different periods in his career. We invite you to discover them in this new series of Collectables, starting, of course, with the installation that since 1998 has come to identify the building, integrating the various floors and unifying interior and exterior in an almost structural manner. You can hear in a new audio a full description of Rinzen, the work that was awarded the Golden Lion for painting when it was presented at the 1993 Venice Biennale. Four years earlier, it had been part of a stage set for a show at the Mercat de les Flors in Barcelona. Tàpies conceived the work as a call to peace, to introspection and to conscience awakening, which is what is implied in the Japanese word rinzen. While supervising the installation of the work at MACBA, Tàpies explained to the press that what he wanted to do was ‘to activate a mechanism that would provoke a desire for profound contemplation’. In this new series, it will be Tàpies himself who will guide us through the works.
