House of the Sun, 2020

Media installation, Variable dimensions

From the starting point of our relationship with the sun, Pedro Torres has created an immersive installation built around this great star without which life would not be possible. House of the Sun reflects on notions such as distance, movement, and time cycles from a physical, but also philosophical and sensory point of view. What is the solar sustainability of the future like? What can we expect in terms of the survival of a star that is the source of energy for our existence but can also destroy us?

House of the Sun combines multiple elements. The space is filled with small suns formed by the light of overhead projectors and photographic filters. Spherical objects, a moulded brass rod, a fossil, and photographic plates of the photosphere outline a brief history of the transformation of matter that allowed for the emergence of life. The screens display a timelapse of a complete solar cycle created by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory overlaid with astrological symbols, a video in which drops of iodine conjure up images of the activity on the solar surface or the setting of the sun, a diptych with an anachronistic blend of images of the sun and a text outlining the notions that have shaped this project.
