The new Plaça del Àngels and the Expansion Project
MACBA’s expansion project is still on track thanks to the support of the members of the Consortium and other agents in the city.
On 4 March 2024, His Excellency Mr. Jaume Collboni, Mayor of Barcelona and President of the Consortium of the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, announced the new public uses that will reconfigure the Plaça dels Àngels from the beginning of 2027, as well as the new facilities and improvements in this part of the Raval.
A public space with more greenery, shade and seating areas. These are some of the additions that, in the near future, will help to revitalise the Plaça dels Àngels, together with the new Raval Primary Health Centre and new spaces for MACBA.
The new Plaça dels Àngels wants to be a place where the public can meet and coexist thanks to an intervention that pivots around the reconversion of the elevated area outside the Meier building. Rethinking this space of 1,105 m² will allow for the incorporation of green areas with seating facilities, to which will be added a 349 m² public viewing-terrace above the new building.
The Mayor has also reaffirmed his commitment to MACBA’s expansion project, so that during March 2024 the necessary procedures can be carried out for the works to be licensed for a starting date in June.
With an investment of 16.26 million euros, this project will incorporate 2,110 m² of new exhibition rooms, gallery, storage space and facilities, allowing for more works and more artists from the MACBA Collection to be displayed. This reinforces MACBA’s aim to construct new narratives that are essential for contemporary creation, and to do so in an accessible and permeable manner.
