Since it was founded, the Museu d’Art Contemporari de Barcelona has engaged in a wide range of publishing activities, which mainly take the form of exhibition catalogues and monographic books, but also encompass works on artistic practice and collections of critical essays and contemporary thought. These publications are not just intended to document the exhibitions, but also to further the study of contemporary art by making contributions to theory. Moreover, MACBA plays a role in transmitting content by making otherwise inaccessible documents and other materials available to local users, and also by offering local artists and groups the chance to make their work known internationally.
Beyond this, MACBA also focuses on diversifying formats by exploring digital publishing models. Along these lines, the Museum edits three online publications: Quaderns portàtils (Portable Notebooks), which are compilations of conference proceedings, texts by artists, and lectures delivered at MACBA seminars; Quaderns d'àudio (Audio Notebooks), which complement the work of Ràdio Web MACBA with texts on sound art; and Sèrie Capella MACBA, which offers a new way of understanding artistic production in the framework of the Capella MACBA space.
