Benet Rossell

Benet Rossell "Off rideau i societat d'apuntadors", 1971

This project was awarded with the Premio ACCA de la Crítica de Arte for the best contemporary art exhibitions in 2011.

Art critic Jean-Clarence Lambert coined the term artor – a cross between artist and author – to describe Benet Rossell's (Àger, 1937) multifaceted creative personality. Drawing, engraving, signic writing, performance, sculpture, film, music, theatre and poetry are interwoven through Rossell's work, creating an extremely personal conception in which the artwork is a process of constant reinvention.

Parallel Benet Rossell rejected the conventions of a chronological retrospective in favour of offering a selective journey through the artist's work, with a particular focus on two of his most distinctive languages: calligraphy and film.

Rossell fashions a poetics of fragility tinged with irony and a critical spirit, and delves into the micro-worlds that are generally ignored by the absolutist accounts of art history. Though abstract in appearance, his work has a strong narrative component, which modestly and discreetly draws on the artist's own biography.

The exhibition, which encompassed Rossell's output between 1965 and 2010, included a considerable number of works that were presented for the first time, as well as two new pieces created specifically for the occasion: Penso amb la punta del pinzell (2010) and Paral·lel, paral·lel (2010).
