Woman with Reflection, 1988
Painting,
24.5 x 33.5 cm
Condo emerged as a painter in the New York art scene during the eighties. He coined the term Artificial Realism for his distinctive style of American painting that draws on the European tradition from Raphael to Duchamp, but combines this with the influence of popular cartoons. All the works shown here were exhibited in his solo exhibition at the Galeria Salvador Riera in Barcelona in 1992. Thus, while these images employ the broader art historical referents at play in Condo’s work, they combine this with numerous references to Pablo Picasso, and do so with both a sense of subversive parody and psychological complexity.
