Postmodern conditions
According to leading theoreticians of the postmodern such as David Harvey or Fredric Jameson, the sixties was the decade in which the historical conditions of posmodernity or late capitalism crystallized: post-Fordism, the Cold War and the culmination of the welfare state, the emergence of the Third World as a political category, the period when television was transforming the public sphere and establishing the hegemony of the communications media, when consumption attained the status of crucial cultural category in the capitalist West. But the sixties also saw the fashioning within the various social, political and cultural orders of new critical discourses, the emblem of which would be May'68.
