The seventeenth LEM Festival brings the Prix International Luigi Russolo to Barcelona, thanks to the ongoing collaboration over the last few years of a network made up of Gràcia Territori Sonor (Barcelona), Studio Forum (Annecy), Monochrome Vision (Moscow) and the Fondazione Russolo-Pratella (Varese). In its 32nd edition, the Prix opens up a dialogue with LEM that will explore the connections between Russolo's sonic-futurist principles, his 'art of noises' and the industrial music movement, with the presence of some of its most emblematic figures – including Steve Stapleton, Andrew Liles and Esplendor Geométrico – at MACBA.

Also, on Friday 19 October (from 11 am to 2 pm), the MACBA Auditorium will host the public auditions of this year's eleven finalists. Listeners will be able to vote for the Audience Award, which will be added to the Russolo Grand Prix and the special mentions awarded by the international jury.

Organized by Gràcia Territori Sonor

Steve Stapleton and Andrew Liles(NWW)

Steve Stapleton and Andrew Liles have had a hand in writing a large part of the wildest and (not so) secret history of exploration in sound: a history that includes such fireproof and conclusive experiences as Nurse With Wound or Current 93 as well as a whole range of musical and artistic practices that blow up the theoretical boundaries between industrial darkness, dada humor and John Cage. The first night of LEM at MACBA will be an occasion for, building on these resounding threads, take things a whole lot further. After all, neither Stapleton nor Liles are at home with a discourse based on mandatory references or celebratory remnants. Their meeting will no doubt have the unpredictable, flashing and deafening beat of an objet trouvé by Lautréamont. Insisting on the extraordinary nature of the occasion is for cowards, without a doubt.

Esplendor Geométrico

This homage to Russolo and to futurism at the MACBA culminates with a performance that hardly needs any introduction. Arturo Lanz and Saverio Evangelista continue untiringly feeding the terrible sound machine that has been shaking up the industry imagination to seek out new and meandering forms. Esplendor Geométrico has survived the successive falls of civilization and has been the indisputable epigone of its most ferocious rebirths. At the moment they are at full throttle, with new recordings and constant transformations. Being at an Esplendor Geométrico concert is the closest thing to witnessing (while dancing, why not) the future bursting out in its most immediate and brutal version. And at the MACBA you will have the opportunity to see it for yourself. If this is the end of the world, let it just keep on ending.
