The MACBA Collection is present at the great exhibition Antoni Tàpies. The Practice of Art, which opened a few days ago at Bozar, Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, and which in 2024 will be presented at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, and the Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona. It is an exhibition that re-examines the work of Tàpies as a painter since 1943, when, aged 18, and while recovering from a lung disease after a long period of convalescence, he discovered the extraordinary expressive possibilities of art and decided to abandon his Law studies to dedicate himself to painting. The MACBA works are part of this first creative moment. Tàpies refers to these years and his first artistic explorations in his book A Personal Memoir. ‘It was above all the expression, sincere though confused, of what seemed to me at the time a genuine experience or relationship that I had with the cosmic, abyssal forces that so often attracted me during those times and into which my mind sometimes submerged to depths that were alarming to me myself.’
