The Power with which We Leap Together

MACBA artists included at Valencia's IVAM

Fina Miralles and Àngels Ribé are included in the exhibition The Power with which We Leap Together. Women Artists in Spain and Portugal between Dictatorship and Democracy, currently at IVAM, Centre Julio González, Valencia. Co-produced with Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, Lisbon, it features a significant number of Spanish and Portuguese artists who, during the 1960s and early 1970s, worked in alternative circles and in opposition to the dictatorships in the two countries at the time. Both the Franco regime in Spain and the Salazar regime in Portugal (which ended in 1968 with the so-called Carnation Revolution) adopted the same motto to summarise their ideology: ‘God, country and family’. A repressive and moralistic doctrine that gave little leeway to women artists. Loans from the MACBA Collection to the exhibition include works by Fina Miralles and Àngels Ribé, two artists whose practice followed on from Action Art and Arte Povera. Miralles is represented by her box-suitcase Mar d’Herba (The Sea of Grass, 1973), and the photo-action L’arbre. L’arbre i l’home. Paraules a l’arbre (The Tree. The Tree and Man. Words to the Tree, 1975/2020), while Ribé is represented by the photo-actions Intersecció de llum and Intersecció de pluja (Light Intersection and Rain Intersection, both from 1969).
