Itziar Okariz’s actionism revolves around language and the body as ideological constructs that shape identity, many of them tied to gender. The artist herself describes her performance series "Mear en espacios públicos o privados", carried out between 2000 and 2004, in the following terms: “A series of actions made in specific locations chosen in advance. There is no audience gathered for the occasion, though passersby may witness the action by chance. Generally I try to do it when there is little traffic, given the furtive or illegal nature of the act. In this sense, I am interested in highlighting what is legally permitted and what is not—a kind of social definition of the individual. I have always documented the action, both in photography and on video. . . . Another important aspect is that urinating standing up is associated with a performance of masculinity. I have chosen different sites according to different interests, always with the aim of broadening the spectrum of meanings.”
