Lawrence Weiner va néixer al Bronx de Nova York el 1942 i va viure entre aquesta ciutat i el seu vaixell a Amsterdam. Després de cursar estudis de Filosofia i Literatura al Hunter College de Nova York, va deixar-los al cap d'un any per viatjar pels Estats Units, Mèxic i el Canadà. Al 1960, va utilitzar dinamita en un parc de Califòrnia per crear escultures per sostracció. Quan el 1964 va tornar a Nova York, va exposar a la galeria de Seth Siegelaub pintures amb dissenys televisius de l'època i obres en què el públic decidia quina part volia que l'autor retallés. L'any 1968, també en aquesta galeria, va presentar un llibre en què les obres d'art només es formulaven lingüísticament: no s'arribaven a materialitzar.

Iniciava així una fèrtil trajectòria que ha estat fonamental en l'art conceptual de la segona meitat del segle XX. Weiner va explorar les capacitats del llenguatge com a mitjà escultòric i forma artística. Les seves escultures lingüístiques es valien de tipografies, signes i altres elements formals combinats amb sentències i afirmacions epigramàtiques que sovint feie referència als materials i a les condicions de treball en què va sorgir l'escriptura. També va ser autor de vídeos i pel·lícules, treballs sonors, performances, llibres d'autor i textos teòrics. Premiat en múltiples ocasions, la seva obra es troba a les més destacades col·leccions d'art contemporani.
