Mariana Castillo Deball was born 1975 in México City, today she lives and works in Berlin and Amsterdam. Mariana Castillo Deball studied fine art at the National University in Mexico and at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, the Netherlands. After MA in Philosophy at the Iberoamerican University in Mexico, she obtained her MFA at the National University in Mexico and visited the Postgraduate program at Jan Van Eyck Academie, Maastricht (NL). Her works have presented in solo exhibitions at several international institutions, including Kunsthalle St. Gallen, Switzerland (2009), Museum of contemporary Art Carrillo Gil, Mexico City (2006), Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and Center for contemporary art, Maastricht (both 2004), Jan van Eyck Academie, Maastricht (2003 and 2002). Mariana Castillo Deball’s work is characterized by the tension between order and coincidence. The Mexican artist maps out areas of action and memories as well as object worlds that often display a specific historical and cultural context. During her research, the artist looks for institutions that house collections, classifications, catalogues and (re-)presentations of cultural assets, such as libraries, museums and archives, and which represent a symbolic classification of the world. She also creates apparently banal visual investigations, which are brought into unexpected coherence through narrative wit and tactile precision. Mariana Castillo Deball is thereby able to solve one of the most demanding challenges of contemporary art: to combine conceptual asperity and intellectual requirement with a sensual and innovative aesthetic.
