Lawrence Weiner nació en el Bronx de Nueva York en 1942 y vivió entre esta ciudad y su barco en Ámsterdam. Después de cursar estudios de Filosofía y Literatura en el Hunter College de Nueva York, los dejó al año para viajar por Estados Unidos, México y Canadá. En 1960, utilizó dinamita en un parque de California para crear esculturas por sustracción. Cuando en 1964 regresó a Nueva York, expuso en la galería de Seth Siegelaub pinturas con diseños televisivos de la época y obras en las que el público decidía qué parte quería que el autor recortara. En 1968, también en esta galería, presentó un libro en el que las obras de arte sólo se formulaban lingüísticamente: no se llegaban a materializar.

Iniciaba así una fértil trayectoria que fue fundamental en el arte conceptual de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Weiner exploró las capacidades del lenguaje como medio escultórico y forma artística. Sus esculturas lingüísticas se valían de tipografías, signos y otros elementos formales combinados con sentencias y afirmaciones epigramáticas que a menudo se referían a los materiales y a las condiciones de trabajo en las que había surgido la escritura. También fue autor de vídeos y películas, trabajos sonoros, performances, libros de autor y textos teóricos. Premiado en múltiples ocasiones, su obra se encuentra en las más destacadas colecciones de arte contemporáneo.
