Tlaloc, 1944

Graphic material, 38.1 x 36.8 cm
Josef Albers’ prints make use of the organic nature of the natural wood grain, which is incorporated into the composition and is in contrast to the geometrical line itself. With his wife, the artist Anni Albers, in 1935 he made the first of fourteen trips to Mexico, and was greatly influenced by Mexican art and architecture. Tlaloc is the Aztec god of rain, lightning and thunder, a divinity widely revered in this civilisation.
