The Spherical Book, 1986

Sculpture, Vitrina 175 x 50 x 50 cm
Research into the essence of forms of representation is behind the works The Figure of Question, The Soft Cube and Spherical Book. They all present pure forms of polished surfaces, made of white marble from the Greek island of Kavala, which search for perfection. Byars, guided by what he called ‘the first fully interrogative philosophy’, made pieces which explore geometric shapes in search of spirituality, truth and beauty. Together with the use of marble and its reminder of the Classical world, Byars also used gold, for its historical references to divinity and perfection.
