The Photographic Building of Barcelona

The purpose of the course is to consider the way in which Barcelona has been built by photography over the century. In an era when the city's image is a crucial element in economic, social and domestic political discourses and above all in the promotion of the metropolis around the world, analysis and reflection on its construction and the imaginaries that have developed, this image has become of prime importance, as highlighted by the exhibitions organised from the time of the Olympic Games through to the present day. Conflict over this image is today indissolubly linked to every conflict over the city. The course will focus in the main on photographic projects that have been seen by large numbers of citizens and which have played a part in shaping the imaginary of Barcelona at various times over the course of the century.
Those who have registered for the course may also take part in the prior seminar The Metropolis in the Photographic Era (MACBA, 2 and 3 February 2007) and visit the exhibition Manolo Laguillo, Barcelona 1978-1997... (MACBA, 2 March - 6 May 2007).

Organised by the Fundació Antoni Tàpies and the Barcelona History Seminary of the Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona with the support of the MACBA and the ICE.
The ICE will issue a certificate of attendance to everyone who registers for the course and attends at least 80% of the sessions held throughout the duration of the course.
