‘It was the beginning of cable television and as such probably the first opportunity, and maybe the last, to be able to participate in the whole cultural process. It would give us a little window to the outside world which enabled us to show our work, not just my own, but the work of everybody, and to create a truly alternative television. The timing was perfect.’
Jaime Davidovich premiered his The Live! Show on Channel J of Manhattan Cable Television on 21 December 1979. The weekly programme featured performances and interviews with personalities from the art world, short lectures and episodes of teleshopping in which, reproducing the language of commercial television, he promoted his own products. Dr Videovich, played by Davidovich, theorised about the new television medium as a platform for artistic production and about television culture. Inspired by the performances of the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, where the Dada movement was born, and the innovative TV comedian Ernie Kovacs, he was a pioneer, unique in the use of television by the artistic community. After five years, the programme was withdrawn.
