TEJA
Network of Cultural Spaces in Support of Emergency Situations
TEJA / Network of Cultural Spaces in Support of Emergency Situations promotes transnational cooperation by offering temporary accommodation to artists and cultural workers who find themselves in complex socio-political situations in their countries of origin.
Conflicts not only disrupt essential services in the affected zones, but also deeply impact the development of artistic practices and limit freedom of expression. TEJA sees art as a key way to preserve the culture of a people whose autonomy is threatened. This is why it shows its commitment by providing safe spaces for artistic work, as well as helping to reinforce international networks of support and solidarity.
TEJA began as a gesture of solidarity from the artistic and cultural sector in response to the emergency triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has since continued working with other emergency contexts, such as Palestine and Iraq, forging new alliances. The network is currently made up of more than 15 institutions (public and private) and independent organisations in the arts sector, among them MACBA.
These are: Casa Árabe (Madrid), Casa de Velázquez (Madrid), Círculo de Bellas Artes – Casa Europa (Madrid), hablarenarte / Planta Alta (Madrid), Hangar (Barcelona), Institute for Postnatural Studies (Madrid), La Casa Encendida – Fundación Montemadrid (Madrid), La Escocesa (Barcelona), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (Madrid), Moving Artists (Bilbao), MACBA (Barcelona), Nave Oporto (Madrid), Paisanaje (Madrid) and Proyecto Celesta (Madrid).
