Sentimental Room, 1984

Created in collaboration with Montse Guillén, El Internacional Tapas Bar & Restaurant transformed the former Teddy’s restaurant into an experiment that fully integrated cuisine and site-specific art. Located in New York’s West Broadway, and active from 1984 to 1986, it soon became an icon of Manhattan’s downtown. Diners such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Robert De Niro and Andy Warhol experienced the first tapas bar in the city providing information on its dishes and products in a pioneering video-menu and in a space conceived as an artistic and ‘performative’ venue.

Included in the MACBA Collection are several audiovisual recordings linked to this project. Sentimental Room (1984) is a video recorded by Miralda and Jordi Torrent in the manner of an album recalling Teddy’s famous customers. Videomenu (1984), another collaborative work by Miralda and Jordi Torrent, is a video advertising the menu of El Internacional. Conceived as one more element of the space, it showed Miralda’s food-art works on a monitor sitting on a statue of Bacchus placed on top of a column of plates. Boston TV (1986), a programme on Boston’s public television reporting on the restaurant, echoes the huge success the bar enjoyed among the artistic and intellectual community in New York.
