Also included in the work, Le Camion de Zahïa. Conversations après le paradis perdu by Mireia Sallarès, which deals with urban changes and their impact on people’s lives, is a selection of documentaries projected onto the truck during a series of free sessions taking place every Friday evening during April-May. The selection shows the transformation of the city of Barcelona and the consequences this has had on the lives of its inhabitants for the past ten years.

The documentaries are subtitled into English or Spanish, and will be presented by the filmmakers or people linked to the project, with a debate taking place at the end of each session.

De nens (For children)

The history of Barcelona’s Barrio Chino, or red-light district, from the period of the Transition from dictatorship to democracy to the present day, and the neighbourhood’s resistance against the destruction and gentrification of the revamped Raval district. Also exposed in this context is a case of paedophilia that shocked Barcelona in the nineties. The trial ended with only two prison sentences, but many innocent people were scarred for life.

A real estate agency, charged with restructuring various areas in the old centre of Barcelona, expropriated several blocks of flats in the Ribera quarter at rock-bottom prices. This new vacant space, where houses had previously stood, was named El Forat de la Vergonya (The shameful hole) by people in the neighbourhood. It was their way of denouncing a situation considered degrading for various reasons, and the beginning of a long territorial struggle that continues to this day.

Chronicle of the struggles that people in the Barceloneta have conducted since 2005 with the so-called Pla dels Ascensors (Lift Plans) – that would have evicted over one thousand families – to today’s demonstrations against the redevelopment of the Port Vell. It is the resistance of a neighbourhood, originally made up of workers and fishermen, against their area becoming a thematic park for tourists.

This audiovisual piece ‘colonises’ the car park underneath Plaça de Las Navas. Based on real telephone conversations, the voices of the clients belong, nevertheless, to characters constructed in our workshop, personifying precariousness, the obsession with security and the area’s gentrification. The relation between fiction and reality exposes the tension between the need to normalise urban spaces and the forces against it.
