In Free Fall is a trilogy that includes Before the Crash, After the Crash and Crash. It relates the story of the current economic crisis through the example of a plane cemetery in the Mojave Desert in California. Following the life of the Boeing 4X-JYI originally purchased by Howard Hughes, then used by the Israeli air force before being blown up in the film Speed and finally recycled and transformed into DVDs, Steyerl unveils unexpected connections between economy, violence and entertainment in the era of globalised capitalism.

A prolific writer, filmmaker, theorist and teacher, Hito Steyerl’s research and interests cover topics as diverse as cultural globalisation, feminism, and itinerant media. Her films are a montage of politics and pop, Hollywood and independent film, interviews and voice-over commentaries, which present provocative filmic analyses of the present.
Steyerl is Visiting Professor for Experimental Media Creation at the University of Arts, Berlin. Her book Die Farbe der Wahrheit (2008) explores documentary strategies in contemporary art.
