Round table

The idea of this panel is to review and question some of the dominant elements that keep recurring in the historicization of the Spanish transition to democracy, in particular the magazine Nueva Lente, the normalisation of a particular discourse on the incorporation of photography into the art system, an account of the generational rupture of the sixties and the new prominence of the 'fifth generation'. These prevailing commonplaces help to explain the period, but they also generate a series of exclusions and blind spots that need to be exposed and explored.

One of the aspects that are consistently ignored or insufficiently analysed is the link between the changes in photographic culture and structural changes in Spain’s cultural policies and in the broader framework of the cultural sphere around the world, and the new cultural, political and the economic relations. In other words, in the seventies the traditional discursive space of photography shifted from print and the media to the exhibition space, and photography burst onto the scene of the new cultural industries. In Spain, the seventies were also the start of a process of reconstruction of the cultural institutions and the recovery of historiography and heritage.

The aim of the debate is to contribute a new reading of the period and to open up new channels for research and interpretation.

Round table with Enric Mira, Marie-Loup Sougez and Carmelo Vega. Moderated by Jorge Ribalta and Cristina Zelich, curators of the 'Barcelona International Centre of Photography, 1978-1983' exhibition.
