Proyecto Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, c. 1972

Everson Museum of Art Project, Syracuse, c. 1972
Drawing, 26 x 23 cm

In parallel with her sculptural and paper production, Gego also designed interventions in architecture and public buildings, which she always saw as a continuation of her work with lines and space. Instead of being closed in their own plastic discourse, these works interact with buildings as parallel architectures in a compositional dialogue through space. As the artist herself explains: ‘I can't conceive of the works I want to do separately from architecture: I'm interested in projecting architecture into the surrounding space, and that’s always a different challenge.’ (Gego arquitecto. Caracas: Fundación Gego, 2006, p. 26)

The MACBA Collection contains the drawings of some of these architectural interventions, such as the Proyecto para el Banco Industrial de Venezuela (1962), the first that she executed and which, like her work in drawing, consists of a structure of linear elements intersecting and expanding in different planes and directions through space. While this installation was located outside a bank building, Esquema para la instalación de la Reticulárea en Alte Oper was presented at the Spielraum-Raumspiele group exhibition at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, this city’s historic opera house, in 1982. This is one of her environmental Reticuláreas, which she completed during the process of setting up the exhibition. The result is not a differentiated volume, but a lattice of steel rods linked with minimum support points – like her Reticuláreas – that occupies the space irregularly and without any focal point, generating in the viewer an immersive experience.

Other unrealised architectural projects include Reticulárea Between Buildings (1969), which reflects Gego's dream of expanding her Reticuláreas between urban skyscrapers. Planned for a narrow street in New York City, Gego’s wire architectures were to emerge between buildings with their own laws and principles. Space, which was still a basic element, was now the dialectical space of the city. A further unrealised project for the state of New York was the Everson Museum of Art Project, Syracuse, conceived around 1972 for this museum of American art.
