Idiorhythmias is an annual programme centred on work around performative practices and driven by the poetic desire to build, from the institution and through action, an imperfect, ephemeral and unstable community; to theorise collectively and to reflect on the potential of the body in a public sphere dominated by the word. As in previous editions, the programme examines the role of the institution in the constitution of that community and approaches the multiple roles that the viewer can adopt.

The invited artists propose strategies that rethink the idea of collaboration by questioning the terms and contracts from which those strategies are generated, so as not to impose forms of hospitality, behaviour or ways of doing and to respect the discretion of the subjects and their decision-making when defining themselves. This could be summarised with the following question: How to establish forms of collaboration that remain in a critical relationship with the institutional structures that sustain them? Putting aside the simple idea of moving (together,) and thinking again about the motive that moves us, where the social and the collective do not work simply as a mental exercise, but as something to be performed and rehearsed with a certain intentionality.

Programme curated by Ruth Estévez, Associate Curator, Rose Art Museum, Boston, and Pablo Martínez, MACBA’s Head of Programming.

This year we will rehearse different presentation and production formats. Among others, the performance-workshop of Olivia PlenderLearning to Speak Sense, which analyses the power mechanisms arising from the use of the voice; David Levine’s performative lecture Some of the People, All of the Time, which explores the idea of false audiences and will take place at different times and spaces; and Clean Room, by Juan Domínguez, a powerful device that, based on the structure of TV series, is presented as a happening in six episodes (at the rate of two episodes per day) in which the limits of reality and fiction are blurred and the possibility of collective thinking is permanently challenged.

FROM 27 APRIL TO 4 MAY
David Levine. SW7701: Cavern Clay (GP02). Performance.
Venue:
Museum Galleries
For the past few years, David Levine has been exploring how our sense of agency is modified by the presence of paid surrogates in the digital, political and social realms. For Idiorhythmias, the curators have made a contract with Levine and his crowdsourcing agency GetPeople to populate the museum with made-to-order visitors, from 4 pm on 27 April to 7.30 pm on 4 May. Besides visiting the museum and its exhibitions, the only job of these visitors is to convincingly execute a dialogue on the subject of hospitability.
