Potato Print Model 1, 1967
Graphic material,
52 x 67.5 cm
The Potato Prints record the physical transformation of a potato in a Perspex box. They conform to a portrait of its form as it loses weight and volume. Based on the physical model of entropy, used to gauge changes in the weather, the work places the potatoes in an experimental situation to measure the changes in their configuration. The process reminds us of the novel by Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray, except that, in this case, the eponymous character who made a pact with the devil to achieve eternal youth is reduced to a tuber. In these prints, Wilde’s allegory on human corruption is translated into a critique of artistic and temporal permanence.
