Pep Duran studied Set Design at the Escola Superior d'Art Dramàtic, Barcelona. His artistic practice, developed in parallel with designing for the stage, has helped him evolve a strong feeling for the physical presence in space. Both in his installations, sculptural objects and set designs, he experiments with and incorporates the notions of construction, presentation and representation. He has created numerous sets for spaces such as the Teatre Lliure, Barcelona; Teatre Nacional de Catalunya; Teatre Romea, Barcelona; Espai Brossa, Barcelona; and Teatro de la Zarzuela, Madrid. As artistic director, he has collaborated on films by directors such as Jaime Camino, Pere Portabella and Francesc Betriu. Duran is also recognised for public sculpture, such as the installation Una cadena d’esdeveniments (A Chain of Events), a composition of ceramic pieces with inlaid and glazed reliefs presented in the Capella MACBA in 2011 and now permanently installed in the Central Library of the Universitat Autònoma, Barcelona.

Since the end of the seventies, he has had solo exhibitions and installations in spaces in Barcelona such as Espai 10 of the Fundació Joan Miró (1979), Sala Metrònom (1981), La Virreina (1995), Capella MACBA (2011 ) and Teatre Nacional de Catalunya (2018), as well as Koldo Mitxelena, San Sebastián (1995) and Museu d'Art, Sabadell (2002). Between 2009 and 2010, his project Sin escenario toured to contemporary art museums, such as Museo de Arte, San Salvador, El Salvador; Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo, San José, Costa Rica; Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Panama; and Centro Cultural de España, Mexico City. His work is part of collections including Fundació “la Caixa”, Fundació Vila-Casas and Col·lecció Suñol in Barcelona; Artium, Vitoria-Gasteiz; Waddington Galleries, London; and MACBA, Barcelona.
