High Five Zara composition01.ai (the Poignant)
2014
This is one of the first pieces in a long series made with laser on denim; the result of an experimentation process that concluded at the IAAC FabLab in Barcelona in 2014. It is an experience that gave rise to various works, some produced for the third part of the exhibition cycle curated by Martí Manen and David Armengol at the Fabra i Coats in Barcelona and others for a solo show at the Kunstverein Hildesheim in Germany entitled Mit eigener Hand (With One’s Own Hands). With this practice, the artist appropriates a technique used by common fashion brands to artificially wear down jeans. This consists of burning an image with a laser as if it were a photograph, which ends up virtualising the body of the person who wears them. In this case, Grilo uses patterns taken from Zara trousers that have been transferred to the fabric. They compose giant handprints on denim canvases and seams that trace the lines of the hand.
Some of the topics for reflection that are created around this series are the sustainability and ecology of today’s large production systems, offshoring and the carbon footprint that these generate, the alternative that local and sustainable production provides, and hyper-consumerism and commodification as an indisputable value imposed by fashion.
