“The most precise, minimal gesture of the hand revives for us a full variation of interior spaces populated with anthropomorphic figures, animals and landscapes waiting to be discovered”, stated Benet Rossell, in reference to his own creative world. Rossell invented his own alphabet with tiny drawings, icons, graphic marks, as well as his benigrames (he was known as “Beni”), as rich and subtly varied as the painter’s palette. One of various Catalan artists who had moved to Paris in 1964, Rossell here models a poetics of fragility without ridding himself of irony and a critical spirit, as he focuses on the microworlds generally ignored by absolute narratives in the history of art. While it may seem like abstraction, his work has a sharply defined narrative component as it becomes a micro-theatre, or just as well the calligraphic representation of the grand theatre of the world.
