Media Sites / Media Monuments (Washington D.C.)
1981
With this piece Muntadas began a series on historical memory, carried out in various physical and political geographies around the world. With black and white photographs taken from the media, he revives events that had taken place earlier in the centre of Washington, such as the civil rights demonstrations and indigenous protests in front of the White House in the seventies, or the murder of exiled Chilean opposition leader Orlando Letelier by agents of Pinochet in 1976. Muntadas matches each of these images with another, more current photograph, presented in colour, taken in the exact location. In this way the site is seen as “normalised” in the full sense of the term, with no trace of its past. In other pieces in this series, Muntadas documents historical silence and the omission of political memory in cities such as Buenos Aires, Budapest and Rome.
