Oriol Vilapuig
Otranto Fanfarria
Otranto Fanfarria
2019 - 2022
In Otranto Fanfarria, Oriol Vilapuig composes a powerful, mordant frieze conceived as a choral painting. It is a gallery of characters or an imago mundi, which following the style of Hieronymus Bosch, brings together archetypical figures in a grotesque manner. The large scene, in the theatrical sense of the term, is like a play of masks conceived to invalidate any sort of logic. In this collage, with its various techniques, the characters represented evoke death, the devil, justice, power and other archetypes, as projected by the viewer’s imagination. In total there are 59 figures, which with their erratic deviations seem to point to a certain political inefficiency. Vilapuig includes references to Josephine Baker, Leonard Cohen, Guy Debord and Franz Kafka. This piece also features Niséh Radéh. Le profezie e le maschere, an audio intervention created specifically for the work by Riccardo Massari Spiritini, an Italian sound artist and composer residing in Sabadell, who performs the imaginary world of Vilapuig to reinforce the visual dramaturgy of the scene.
