Concha Jerez made her series of self-censored texts during the period known as the Spanish Transition, which followed the death of the dictator. This pioneering, Spanish Conceptual art artist wrote her illegible texts on plain, white paper. Without renouncing their linguistic configuration (we still recognise them as texts), they have lost their inherent ability to communicate. As she herself explains, they are ‘illegible, self-censored writings based on concrete situations experienced by the author during the Franco regime’. Jerez explores a personal and social landscape made up of limits, silences, conflicts and exclusions. With a powerful poetic sense, she builds single sheets of paper into volumes, while denying their communicative properties. In this particular piece, while the paper lying flat maintains the linear typology of the writing, on the paper in the vertical position the black ink has redacted the entire space, turning it into an opaque and blind surface.
