Isidoro Valcárcel Medina
La Celosía
Jealousy
1972
The conceptual artist Isidoro Valcárcel Medina adapted Alain Robbe-Grillet's novel La jalousie (1957) for the cinema. A pioneer of the so-called nouveau roman, the book breaks with all the usual conventions of the novel, presenting a jealous husband who interprets events guided by his obsession until it becomes impossible to differentiate whether he is talking about real or imagined events.
Starting from this experimental text, Valcárcel Medina constructs a film that plays with the dissociation between image and sound, invalidating the conventions of cinema. While the screen shows fragments of the novel in typewritten fragments that advance slowly, different voices (including Esther Ferrer's) do the reading. Although the texts on the screen are in Spanish and French, the voices reading add up to different languages. Valcárcel superimposes the audio of the voices until they are intelligible, thus dissociating what is heard and what is read. The film was screened at the Encuentros de Pamplona in 1972, an international meeting that consolidated conceptual art in Spain. The poster for the film, made by the artist, is also presented.
