Harun Farocki
Schlagworte, Schlagbilder. Eine Gespräch mit Vilém Flusser
Catch Phrases – Catch Images. A Conversation with Vilém Flusser
1986
One of the elements that structure the work of Harun Farocki is his constant conversation with images, with their construction, and with the role played by institutions and the various media. As he once said: ‘My films are made against the cinema and against television.’ In this work from 1986, Farocki shifts his critical gaze to the press.
Taking the form of an interview, Catch Phrases. Catch Images. Conversation with Vilém Flusser examines the ideas of Czech philosopher Vilém Flusser concerning the need for the image in our view of the world. One of Farocki’s theoretical references, Flusser analyses how the front page of the German newspaper Bild Zeitung is structured. This page is an entity in itself: on the one hand, it is impossible to reach the text without referencing the images, designed to achieve maximum impact; on the other, the typography of the headlines – large white letters on black – creates a bold visual impression. Image and text reinforce each other to maximise the ‘impact’.
