Mathias Goeritz
Torres de Ciudad Satélite II
1970
In 1975, together with urban planner Mario Pani and architect Luis Barragán, Mathias Goeritz created the sculptural project Torres de Ciudad Satélite. Located in the north of Mexico City, in Ciudad Satélite, it consists of five concrete towers that are basically five large rectangular prisms of different dimensions and colours. Despite their colossal size, Goeritz plays with the limits of scale, the proximity of the piece to the spectator’s vision and the different possible angles of vision. The work soon became a national emblem of modernity. Since its construction, the use of monumental scale and the synthetic language of geometry associated with the idea of progress identify Goeritz as both a strategist and agitator. The two screenprints in the MACBA Collection also incorporate five rectangular prisms of different sizes and colours, and as such are visual studies of the sculpture of Ciudad Satélite.
