In 2011, Daniela Ortiz created the documentary photographic series Habitaciones de servicio, an architectural analysis of upper-class homes in Lima focused on the living space assigned by wealthy households to domestic workers. Ortiz notes their size compared to that of other rooms in the house and their location within the building. She chooses houses of different architectural styles, from classical to functional, constructed between 1930 and 2012, and shows their frontage, plans, the architects’ CV and a comparison between the different rooms. In presenting the series at the àngels barcelona gallery, Ortiz accompanied the documentary photographic compositions with a video showing the first day at work for a domestic worker in one of these houses, and how the owner showed her the rooms and explained the tasks she would have to perform. She then showed her the room where she was to sleep. The exhibition also included a poster for visitors to take away with them, with the phrase, “Maids’ rooms: there is no excuse for their location and size.”
