Iván Argote
Caricia
Caress
2012
Taking the city as his field of action, Columbian artist Iván Argote infiltrates everyday urban life to set up encounters and raise questions about our relations with others. Caricia points in this direction. As in some of his other work, Argote situates the action in the public space. In 2012 he filmed a couple in love in the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris. In a video lasting just over three minutes, the photographer's shadow caresses the couple, who are caressing one another at the same time. A caress of a caress. A contact that is intrusive but tender at the same time, anonymously taking part in their intimacy. An activist of contact and relations, Argote engages in artistic practice as an experience that activates spaces in which to encounter the other and as a way of exploring the joy of sharing. His actions in public spaces crack open ambiguity and often our wariness in relating to others and to the notion of the stranger. Without sacrificing humour, Argote tries out different relational dynamics to broaden the field of the possible and map out new horizons of meaning.
