ARTISTS & PHOTOGRAPHS
Artists & Photographs is a collective publication in the shape of a cardboard box containing works by nineteen artists. It was compiled and published in 1970 by the gallerist and publisher Marian Goodman, who designed it as an exhibition in a box reflecting the multiplicity of art movements that were developing in the late nineteen-sixties.
This was a time when the artistic need to “create” material objects was being questioned and when many artists opted for the mechanised production of multiple copies in order to reach wider audiences. Goodman was receptive to these concerns, gathering photographs, engravings, texts and artist’s books by leading figures in the fields of conceptual art, land art and pop art, such as Dan Graham, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long, Robert Morris and Andy Warhol, among others.
Over time, Artists & Photographs has become considered an important work in the history of art in the second half of the twentieth century.
