Reimundo Patiño
O Home que Falaba Vegliota
The Man who Spoke Vegliota
1972
The 12 paintings that make up Patiño’s comic O home que falaba vegliota constitute a metaphorical representation of the aggression directed toward minority languages. Vegliota was a language spoken in Dalmatia, in present-day Croatia. Now extinct, at the time when Patiño made his work this Romance language was only spoken by about fifty people. From this starting point, Patiño constructs a story denouncing the repression suffered by the Galician language under the Franco regime. A forceful and satirical chronicle, it shows the Pope and the Pentagon hounding the last Vegliota speaker to extinction. It is considered the founding work of the Galician comic.
