Cildo Meireles
Inserçoes em circuitos ideológicos. Projeto Coca-Cola
Insertion in Ideological Circuits. Coca-Cola Project
1970
During the seventies and eighties, the work of Cildo Meireles largely critiqued the military dictatorship in Brazil and its involvement with North-American capitalism. Under the title Inserçoes em circuitos ideológicos. Projeto Coca-Cola (Insertions into Ideological Circuits. The Coca-Cola Project) the artist added disruptive messages to bottles of Coca-Cola, one of capitalism’s iconic objects. Meireles took advantage of the system for returning empty Coca-Cola bottles, which then existed in Brazil, to imprint political messages, such as the well-known slogan ‘Yankees Go Home’. Using a special screen-printing process that imprints a white glaze, the text is only legible when the bottle is full: white text against the dark liquid. With the new message inscribed, Meireles put them back into circulation as an immediate and direct way of highlighting one of the ideological systems through which capitalism is sustained.
